Inside the main building, a large glass globe was perched on a steel stand. It was meant to show the chaotic nature of the atmosphere, but it was a drastic oversimplification. On Earth, air heats and rises along the equator as the planet turns, then cools and sinks when it reaches the poles. Mountains and valleys shape the paths of the wind; volcanoes scorch the air and shade it with their ash; ocean currents absorb heat and then evaporate into the sky, churning the air with their vapors. And, everywhere, warm and cold fronts rub against each other, setting off still more swirling changes. To truly capture that complexity, I would have had to shake the ball like a snow globe.
